Claire Carter is a multidisciplinary artist who transforms familiar objects, images, and language to question how meaning and value are created. Working across painting, found objects, furniture, clothing, and interiors, her practice brings together appropriation, nostalgia, humor, and the beauty of what is often overlooked.
Through acts of intervention, she explores the boundaries between art, design, and everyday life. Nothing is ordinary once you decide it matters.

Art is everywhere.
It begins with how we choose to see.
Renew breathes new life into existing objects, furniture, clothing, and art. Through reuse and transformation, I explore the beauty and possibility in things we might otherwise overlook.
Working with what already exists is part of my commitment to a more sustainable art practice. Renew also explores how an object’s meaning and perceived value change when it enters a new context. Across art, design, fashion, and functional objects, I work with humor, nostalgia, and the histories these things already carry. Their former lives remain visible as something new takes shape.

Untitled (Blue Buddha)
Found Buddha sculpture and spray paint
Untitled (Blue Buddha) begins with a found decorative sculpture and the possibility of seeing it again. Repainted in shades of blue using spray paint, the familiar seated figure takes on a different visual presence. The color draws on Yves Klein’s use of ultramarine, bringing that reference into contact with an object that might otherwise blend into its surroundings.
The transformation preserves the sculpture’s history. Wear, uneven surfaces, and traces of its previous finish remain visible beneath and alongside the blue. These details give the work its particular character: a renewed surface carries the evidence of an earlier life. Color brings attention back to the folds, contours, and small imperfections of an already existing form.
Within Renew, the sculpture explores how a shift in color and context can change the attention an object receives. Its decorative origins remain part of the work. By working with what is already here, Carter invites a closer look at the beauty and artistic possibility held in familiar, overlooked things.

Untitled (GG Rocker)
Vintage tubular steel rocking chair, paint, and GG monogram jacquard upholstery
Untitled (GG Rocker) brings together a vintage tubular steel rocking chair, a vivid red finish, and GG monogram jacquard upholstery. The chair’s looping frame and familiar proportions evoke the domestic interiors of the 1980s and ’90s. Against that sense of familiarity, the saturated color and patterned seat introduce the visual language of luxury fashion.
The monogram becomes a way to explore perceived value. An everyday piece of furniture acquires different associations when a recognizable pattern enters the picture. The work asks how much of our response belongs to the object’s form, usefulness, or craftsmanship, and how much comes from the status we attach to a symbol. Nostalgia and aspiration occupy the same seat.
As functional art within Renew, the rocker keeps its relationship to everyday life. It remains a chair while also becoming an object to consider and display. Its transformation connects furniture, fashion, and reuse, suggesting that a familiar possession can support a new identity without losing the history that made it worth revisiting.

Think Different
Found Apple “Think Different” Dalai Lama print, found frame and mat, and paint

Think Different begins with a found Dalai Lama print from Apple’s “Think Different” campaign, together with a found frame and mat. A field of vivid blue covers the lower portion of the assembled piece. Inspired by Yves Klein’s use of blue, the painted area moves continuously across the image, its surrounding mat, and the frame that contains it.
This uninterrupted band changes how the separate parts relate to one another. The frame becomes part of the painted surface, and the mat participates in the composition. Above the blue, the portrait and campaign language remain recognizable. The existing image retains its cultural associations even as the intervention changes what can be seen.
For Carter, the words “Think Different” felt like a demand to think differently. The phrase became a challenge to reconsider the very object carrying it: to see beyond its familiar presentation and imagine what else it could become. The painted intervention gives that demand a physical response. Within Renew, the work explores transformation through partial concealment, retaining the original object’s cultural memory while changing the context through which it is seen.

WERK
Paint and collage on a reproduction print after Amedeo Modigliani
WERK brings contemporary culture into a reproduction of a reclining nude by Amedeo Modigliani. Carter alters the existing image with paint and collage, introducing references that shift the figure into a conversation about Gen Z, leisure, and the expectation to be productive. The title plays on the stereotype of a generation dismissed as lazy, using a familiar cultural image as the setting for that provocation.
The figure’s red eyes suggest the effects of THC. A collaged “pussy cat” emerges between her legs, turning a literal image into a sexual pun. Oversized blue lettering, outlined in dripping red paint, fills the surrounding space. Together, these additions bring humor, graffiti, and internet language into contact with the reclining pose.
The tension between the word WERK and the figure at rest gives the piece its central joke. It invites questions about who gets called idle, how leisure is judged, and what counts as work. As part of Renew, the altered reproduction retains its recognizable source while becoming a vehicle for a different cultural moment.
REVELRY
Revelry documents a period of excess, experimentation, and becoming. Nightclubs, drugs, drinking, money, desire, and relationships became ways of trying on different versions of a life.
Across these seven works, the pursuit of attention, pleasure, and connection meets the emptiness that can follow. It is a series about becoming authentic through trial and error.
Rockstar

Rockstar explores the desire to be seen, recognized, and counted among the stars. It looks at the willingness to do whatever it takes to become famous, even at the cost of authenticity: chasing an image of success before understanding what actually matters.

Queen

Inspired by Marsha P. Johnson, Queen confronts the violence and hypocrisy directed at the very women people turn to for desire and intimacy. In Carter’s telling, her hands are tied: men unable to face their own desires turn their shame against the woman who fulfills them. The work holds that contradiction alongside her dignity and strength.

I make the life
I want to live in.
I’ve never been interested in staying in one lane.
My work moves between painting, objects, furniture, fashion, design, and whatever comes next. I follow an idea wherever it takes me. A canvas, a chair, a piece of clothing, or a found image can all become a place to begin.
The connections between my pieces run deeper than a shared look. They come from the same instincts, questions, memories, humor, contradictions, and obsessions. Sometimes those connections are obvious. Sometimes you have to look a little harder. I like that.
I think of my practice as a mystery unfolding. Each piece reveals something about how I see the world, and the connections emerge as you spend time with the work. Cohesion lives in that ongoing conversation, with room for surprise and change.
I’ve never followed the rules, and I won’t be starting any time soon.
Expect the unexpected.
